Rural Community Empowerment through Nonformal Education: Building Collective Capacity for Sustainable Development

Sustainable village development requires facilitation strategies that go beyond achieving program targets and strengthen the collective capacity of communities as the primary actors in development. This study aims to describe community facilitation strategies based on nonformal education, analyze the process of strengthening collective community capacity, and construct a conceptual model of community facilitation that supports sustainable development. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving village facilitators, village government officials, community leaders, and community groups. Data were analyzed interactively through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with the findings validated through source and method triangulation and member checking. The findings indicate that effective community facilitation strategies comprise four main stages: identifying community needs and potential, participatory planning, implementing nonformal education-based learning, and participatory reflection and evaluation. These strategies contribute to strengthening collective community capacity, as reflected in increased meaningful participation, the development of local leadership, stronger social solidarity, and growing community self-reliance. This study produces a conceptual model of village community facilitation based on nonformal education that positions village facilitators as facilitators of transformative social learning toward sustainable village development.
