Abstract

The history of women's education in Java is often associated with domestic roles encapsulated in the Javanese concept of macak, masak, manak (grooming, cooking, and childbearing) which directly contradicts the true purpose of education. This research is particularly compelling as it aims to analyze the development of 1) Pamardi Putri School as a royal educational institution that initiated the modernization of 2) education for the women of the 3) Surakarta Palace. This study employs the critical historical method, comprising heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography, by utilizing primary archival sources such as official palace announcements like Wara-Wara and Narpawandawa alongside interviews with royal relatives who are descendants of Pakubuwono X. The findings indicate that Pamardi Putri School initially applied strict social stratification rules during student enrollment based on noble lineage and abdi dalem (palace servant) status.
