Abstract

This study examines the authenticity of the transmission chains and meanings of five hadiths cited by K.H. M. Syafi’i Hadzami in volume two of Taudhihul Adillah concerning Qur’anic recitation competitions (MTQ) and the arts, and reassesses his interpretations through Hans-Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutics. Employing qualitative library research, it draws on Taudhihul Adillah, primary hadith collections and commentaries, biographical and narrator-criticism literature, and Gadamer’s works. Hadith authentication involved takhrij and assessments of chain continuity, narrator reliability, and potential transmission defects. Textual interpretation applied the concept of fusion of horizons. The findings indicate that most cited hadiths are classified as hasan, while some transmission routes are sahih and others da‘if. Hermeneutical analysis reveals that Islamic understandings of art encompass ethical, spiritual, and theological dimensions beyond aesthetics. The hadiths can therefore guide artistic expression consistent with Islamic values without necessarily prohibiting all artistic forms. Whereas Hadzami’s interpretations tend towards literal readings, Gadamer’s approach facilitates dialogue between the hadiths’ historical contexts and contemporary sociocultural realities. It also underscores the importance of preserving moral boundaries while recognising art’s potential for education and dialogue. The study highlights the value of integrating hadith criticism with contextual hermeneutics to develop a more comprehensive understanding of religious texts.
